A Great Place to Play
While working hard to survive in a new frontier, Lawrence County's first settlers hunted and fished to provide sustenance for their families. Over time, though, the wild beauty around them transformed hunting and fishing for necessity into an avenue of refreshment for those weary from their labors.
It's really no accident that Lawrence County is the perfect home for outdoor lovers. Its abundant lakes, streams and forests make it one of the best spots in the state for hunting and fishing, according to the Mississippi Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Lake Mary Crawford and Atwood Water Park on the Pearl River are among the many wonderful opportunities for fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
For those who love outdoor activities of a different sort, Lawrence County lies near a number of first-rate golf clubs in neighboring communities. They're also proud of their own Swan Lake Golf Course, a quaint nine-hole course that reflects the area's down-home style.
Outdoor activities aren't the only source of refreshment and relaxation. The people of Lawrence County have devised a variety of opportunities for good times and celebration. There's no better example of this than the annual Atwood Music Festival held each May. There are quite a few "must-attend" events throughout the year, including the Lawrence County Civic Center Winter Gala in February, the New Hebron Pulpwood Festival in September, and the Monticello and New Hebron Christmas parades in December.
The people of Lawrence County also understand that the fullness of life also includes an appreciation for heritage. For those that want to connect with the region's rich past, they have preserved several historical sites. Former Mississippi governor Andrew Longino's home in Monticello is a wonderful window into early twentieth century Mississippi.
A place to reconnect with the past, to form friendships, to renew the soul. That place is Lawrence County.
